How to Turn an Image Into a Wall Mural
Turning a photograph, piece of artwork or digital image into a full-size wall mural can seem complicated at first. Wall measurements, image proportions, cropping, DPI, wallpaper widths and bleed all need to be considered before anything goes to print.
The good news is that the process becomes much easier when you take it one step at a time.
1. Start With Your Image
Your starting point could be a photograph, a digital artwork, a scanned painting or an AI-created image.
For wall murals, Mural Station recommends starting with a 4K image or better where possible.
Lower-resolution images such as 1K or 2K may struggle to produce a good-quality result when enlarged to large wall dimensions. An image that looks sharp on a computer screen can behave very differently when enlarged to cover an entire wall.
The size of the finished mural and the quality of the original image will both affect the final result.
2. Measure the Wall
Measure the width and height of the wall carefully.
Walls, floors and ceilings aren't always perfectly straight, so you may also need some extra material around the edges of the finished mural. This is commonly referred to as bleed or margin.
Accurate measurements at the beginning can prevent problems later.
3. Speak to Your Printer
This is an important step.
Before preparing your final mural files, speak to the company that will actually print the wallpaper.
Ask them about:
- Their preferred DPI or image requirements
- The wallpaper/material options available
- Maximum printable panel or roll width
- Bleed or margin requirements
- Whether panels should butt together or overlap
- Their preferred file format
Different printers, materials and projects can have different requirements. Your printer should always have the final say on the specifications needed for their equipment.
4. Check the Image Proportions
Your image and your wall may have completely different shapes.
For example, you may have a fairly square photograph but a long, wide wall.
Simply stretching the image to fit would distort it. Instead, part of the image may need to be cropped.
This is why choosing the crop is important. You want the image to fit the wall while keeping the parts of the photograph or artwork that matter most.
5. Create the Mural Panels and Crop the Image
Once the wall dimensions and printer requirements have been entered, Mural Station creates the required mural panel/drop layout.
The app checks the proportions of your image against the wall and tells you if the image needs cropping or if it would otherwise be stretched or squashed to fit.
If cropping is required, there is no need to prepare a separate cropped image yourself.
Click the Crop button and Mural Station opens your uploaded artwork inside a pre-sized cropping frame based on the required wall proportions.
You simply move the artwork up or down to choose the area you want to keep, or left or right when the width needs cropping.
When you're happy with the position, click Save Crop.
Mural Station automatically returns you to the panels/drops section, where your newly cropped image has replaced the original and the panel layout is updated accordingly.
You can then continue with the mural preparation process.
6. Prepare the Image for a Large Wall
Enlarging an image from computer-screen size to wall size can expose limitations that aren't obvious in the original.
Mural Station's processing system prepares the individual mural panels at increased resolution, where appropriate, to help retain image quality for large-format production.
The final suitability of the files should still be confirmed with your chosen printer before committing to print.
7. Check the Panel Seams Before Printing
Before committing the mural to print, Mural Station's Pre-Flight Check lets you inspect how neighbouring panels line up.
For example, you can upload Panel 1 and Panel 2 and bring them together on screen, much like butt-jointing two drops of wallpaper on the wall.
Alignment controls allow you to move the panels up and down so you can closely inspect the join and check that the pattern or image continues correctly across the seam.
You can also inspect the panels for consistency in colour and text, helping you spot possible differences before the files are sent for printing.
The same process can be repeated with neighbouring panels where required.
Mural Station's Room Staging tools serve a different purpose. They allow you to visualise your mural artwork in an interior setting so you can get an impression of how the design could look on a wall.
Room staging is a visualisation tool and should not be treated as an exact representation of the final printed colour or appearance.
8. Download Your Finished Panels
When you're satisfied with the project, download the prepared mural panel/drop files from Mural Station.
Large mural files can be far too big for normal email attachments.
You can upload the downloaded files to a service such as Google Drive or Dropbox, or use another file-transfer method agreed with your printer.
Mural Station prepares the files for you to download. It does not automatically send your files to a printing company.
From Image to Wall Mural
Mural Station was created to take much of the technical difficulty out of preparing an image for a wall mural.
You don't need to be an expert in large-format printing, understand complicated graphics software or have advanced computer skills. The app guides you step by step through wall sizing, cropping, panel creation, image preparation, room staging and pre-print checking.
If you're comfortable uploading an image and downloading a file, Mural Station is designed so you can follow the process.
You remain in control of your image, your crop, your wall dimensions and your chosen printer — while Mural Station handles much of the complicated technical work behind the scenes.
